Pastoral Care
Pastoral Care
It is our mission at PJTC to enhance and nurture the spirit of community within our congregation by addressing the emotional and/or special needs of all our congregants. Every member is invited to help support and comfort those in need within our congregation.
Pastoral support at PJTC is coordinated by our clergy, our Chaplain, and volunteers. Together, they:
- Deliver special greetings at Rosh Hashanah and Pesach
- Deliver necessities and Jewish resources to those who are unable to access them personally
- Phone and visit people who are homebound, living with illness, recently bereaved, providing care for a loved one, going through a difficult family or job transition…anyone who, for whatever reason, could use a sympathetic listening presence
- Help coordinate opportunities for USY members to connect with older congregants
- Assist with rides to events
- Provide information about community resources and events
- With love and respect, comfort families in mourning, assist with preparations for burial, Shiva minyanim and a meal of consolation.
- Respond to other member needs as they arise.

PJTC Chaplain
The primary role of the synagogue Chaplain is to support our Senior Rabbi and Cantor in providing Pastoral Care for members of our congregation.
Specifically, this means reaching out to congregants and their family members in times of joy and in times of loss, illness or other challenges; visiting members in the hospital or care facilities, or when they are homebound, and keeping in touch via phone, email, deliveries, and personal notes. The Chaplain helps organize a meal of consolation following a funeral and assists with Shiva minyanim; sponsors occasional events (“Lunch and Learn”) for the whole community, and facilitates support groups on aging, bereavement and other topics as needed. In addition, the Chaplain represents PJTC when unaffiliated Jews in our geographic area need support or resources. The Chaplain works closely with Sisterhood’s Caring Community Outreach activities, and represents PJTC in the Altadena interfaith community.
Congregants are urged to contact the Chaplain by phoning 626-798-1161 or emailing claire@pjtc.net whenever they are aware of needs in our PJTC community.
