MARSHALL FUNDAMENTAL JEWISH CLUB

To our knowledge, Marshall Fundamental High school is the only school in Pasadena with a Jewish club. There is a relatively large Jewish population made up of middle schoolers, highschoolers, and faculty. Every year Marshall lets different culture clubs (ex: latino club) showcase their club to the rest of the school. This year, the school decided to combine all the cultures into one fair. Jewish club had never been a part of culture day, but the club advocated for it to be added to the fair. All the club members were eager to showcase our Jewish culture to the rest of the student body.

The fair included three things: history, tradition, and food. For history we printed out maps of the Jewish diaspora, photos explaining the events of the Holocaust, and explained specific items that we brought such as a kiddush cup and menorah. For tradition we taught and played a game of dreidel. The hardest part to consider was food; we needed to buy or make enough of a Jewish food to feed the entire school (the suggested number was around 1000 samples). Thanks to the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center’s (PJTC) support, the Marshall Fundamental Jewish club was able to bake nearly 1000 rugelach. On the day of the fair, Marshall students enjoyed the baked goods, played dreidel, and learned about Jewish culture. All students were kind, interested, and had fun. It was a great experience and I’d like to thank everyone who helped: PJTC, the Marshall administration, and of course the dedicated students, parents, and faculty of the Marshall Fundamental Jewish Club.
