As many of you are aware, the Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys’ mission is to build community by strengthening and enhancing Jewish life. We do this by being resource for everything Jewish in the greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys. We are a safe place for people to find their way into and connect with both their Judaism and the Jewish community. The programs and services we provide celebrate Jewish community and create opportunities for people to engage with the beauty and richness of Jewish culture. And, we are the Jewish voice for our local community, the eyes and ears who serve to locally educate and promote Judaism and Jewish life.

To that end, over the last several months, in addition to the programs and activities we run, our focus as been squarely focused on being a strong voice in the community. Two examples of this has been our work to combat antisemitism and our ongoing focus on security.

To date, through our effort, 22 of the 48 cities we cover have had their respective City Councils adopt resolutions denouncing antisemitism and all forms of hate.

When it comes to security, we recently joined the Southern California Jewish Security Alliance, a collaboration effort spearheaded by the ADL and Community Security Initiative (CSI) of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles to help communities like ours by creating a network of partners throughout Southern California (i.e. Palm Springs area, Orange County, Los Angeles, Ventura County, and Santa Barbara County) to share information, data and resources to help keep our communities as safe as possible.

Our focus on security even helped PJTC and B’nai Simcha during the swatting incident that took place shortly before Rosh Hashanah.

And I believe it was through all of this work our Jewish Federation has been doing that led to my recently being appointed a commissioner by LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger to the LA County Commission on Human Relations. I look forward to sharing more about the work of the Human Relations Commission is currently and planning to do to promote better human relations in LA County and help build vibrant, thriving communities by working to transform prejudice into acceptance, inequity into justice, and hostility into peace.
