Social Justice Committee - September

The Holocaust in Hungary: Watching “1945” Together

The film “1945” will inaugurate the Social Justice Committee’s occasional film eve(nt) on Sunday, August 27 at 5:00 p.m. in Wolman Hall.  The black-and-white film brings us back to the bleak aftermath of the holocaust in Hungary, as an elderly observant father and his son return to their village to close the chapter of Jewish life in that place.  Their reception by anxious townsfolk who are uncertain about the purpose of the visit,   reveals  layers of guilt, betrayal, and anti-Semitism of the sort that made the holocaust possible. Open discussion after the screening will help us reflect on the film and on the challenges we need to confront in responding to and preventing anti-Semitism and hate.

The program is free,  but please RSVP to SJCPJTC@GMAIL.COM to ensure adequate seating.

The theme continues September 10 when the Interfaith Study Group hosts a presentation by Marta Fuchs about her family’s story as survivors of the holocaust in  Hungary. Many of us at PJTC are indebted to Morton and Ilona Fuchs z’l for their many contributions to our community.  Marta will introduce us to the story of one who exemplifies the honorific: “Righteous among the Nations.” Zoltan Kubinyi was the commander of the forced labor battalion that included Morton Fuchs. His actions saved Morton and others in that group from death as the war drew to a close. Watch for the Interfaith Study Group Flier for more information.
