Board Report - July

Summary of

Board of Directors Meeting, Not including Executive Session

July 24, 2023

  • Rabbi Goldstein’s devar Torah noted that transformational leaders should not forget the “why” of their mission while working on the “what and how”.
  • Treasurer Clark Linstone reported that we ended the 2022-23 fiscal year with a nearly $10,000 surplus due to several unique non-operating income items.  The FY2023-24 budget shows a deficit overall, but income from a Cal Security grant for construction will make the first quarter positive.
  • High Holy Day and Religious School registration are open on web site.
  • Cathy Kranser reported that the permanent rabbi search committee task groups are making good progress.
  • Carl Selkin, Shawn Paper, Jesse Duker, and Gregg Mashberg were appointed co-chairs of a new Israel Committee.  From the committee’s presentation: This committee is welcome to all, regardless of background, viewpoint, and current engagement with Israel or Zionism. We welcome all in our community to participate fully and learn more about Israel’s culture, history, music, dancing, cuisine, economy, academics, and its diverse people.
  • John Carlton was appointed to the L’dor v’Dor (endowment) Board for a 3 year term to replace Sandy Hartford.  The Board thanked Sandy for her service.
  • Discussion of a Board and employee conflict of interest policy began but further work is planned.  The policy is required for tax exempt organizations.
  • There was an executive session to discuss Rabbi Aimee’s situation that has now been shared with the congregation.
