Social Justice Committee

By Carl Selkin, co-Chir

Chag Pesach kasher vsame’ach!

We hope to share the PJTC Community second seder with many of you. We haven’t seen the sign-ups yet, but those interested in looking at Pesach from a social justice perspective might wish to join the table that Carl has proposed. The theme for our ancillary discussion will be “crossing borders” and our discussion will—cross some lines/borders.

On April 23, SJC is co-sponsoring the Adult Education zoom presentation on “The Battle for Democracy” in  Israel by UCLA’s Professor Dov Waxman. Please watch for announcements from Adult Ed.

Our bnei mitzvah book project is coming along. Daphna Enzer, Bonnie Skolnik and Peter Dreier comprise the SJC sub-committee drafting the procedure for gifting future celebrants with a meaningful addition to their reading. The group  has already put together an initial list of titles based on recommendations from educators and SJC members. We expect to offer those young people who opt in a choice from the list, ranging from Pirkei Avot to memoirs and stories of social justice heroes. We need input and advice from PJTC religious, education, and lay leaders—and from the congregation—before initiating this new way of welcoming our youngest adult congregants. Many of these books are in both young adult and adult editions, so we can include others who celebrate later in their lives as well.

April SJC Meetings: April 2 at 10:00 a.m. Knell Chapel; April 23 zoom co-sponsored with Adult Ed. April 30 possible tour of murals at City of Hope.  Stay tuned for more information.
