Tikkun Olam / Social Justice Committee
Let justice well up like water, righteousness like an unfailing stream.
Amos 5:24
Mission
Grounded in our tradition’s commitment to help heal the world, the Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center’s Tikkun Olam committee coordinates ongoing charitable, humanitarian, and social action work within the Temple and the larger community. Its efforts include (but are not limited to) consumer education, ending the genocide in Darfur, fundraising for humanitarian projects in Israel, tutoring and other support at Pasadena area public schools (Longfellow Elementary), and food and shelter for homeless people (Union Station). The committee coordinates charitable responses to occurrences, such as Hurricane Katrina. The Committee may agree to undertake a new project when at least one Temple member volunteers to coordinate it.
Members
Membership is open to all congregants who are willing to take an active role in one or more of its projects.
Structure
The work of the Tikkun Olam Committee is carried out by its sub-committees, each of which focuses on a particular project and reports regularly to the Committee.
Meetings
The Tikkun Olam / Social Justice Committee Meeting holds their meetings on the third Thursday of every month at 7:30 PM. Our current focus is on Health Care policy and what we can do to influence it. For more information, contact Committee Chair Karen Gross.
Tikkun olam (Hebrew: תיקון עולם) is a Hebrew phrase that means “repairing the world” or “perfecting the world.” Tikkun olam is an important concept in Judaism. It is frequently used as a synonym for social justice, often with the implication that Jews should work toward the development of a fair and equal society with the same zeal with which their ancestors may have followed Jewish religious law.
