About the Genocide

The genocide in Darfur erupted in early 2003 when Darfur rebels took up arms, claiming decades of ethnic and political marginalization and accusing the government of neglecting the region. Since then, civilians have come under attack from government troops, as well as nomadic militia and rebel groups. Up to 400,000 people have been killed by the government of Sudan and government-allied militias known as the Janjaweed. Over 3 million people are displaced from their homes, their villages burned and looted, their families destroyed. Sudanese national elections, scheduled for April 2010, are unlikely to be free and fair – crackdowns on peaceful protesters in December 2009 prove that the government of Sudan is unwilling to create the conditions necessary for credible elections. Several of the provisions in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended the 20-year civil war between the North and South have not been implemented, and illegitimate elections could be the final straw to push Sudan back into civil war.
