About the Genocide

Since 2003, 400,000 Black African Muslims from Southern Darfur have been killed by the Janjaweed Militia, an arm of the Khartoum government. In addition, some 2.5 million Southern Darfurians have been dispossessed of their homes and belongings and are now in refugee camps scattered throughout Darfur and Chad. In the camps there is not enough food or water, and disease is rampant, as is the gang rape of the women refugees. Despite false hopes of peace, as of the current date, there has been no abatement of the death and destruction.

Update for February 2008

About a year and a half ago, PJTC — in conjunction with Jewish World Watch — held a barbecue to raise money for solar cookers for the women in Darfur. The response was overwhelming — we raised over $5,000!

Recently JWW did a qualitative evaluation of the Solar Cooker Project in the Iridimi refugee camp in Chad. The results are truly heart warming. To all of you who participated, a giant Yasher Koach!

  1. Before solar cookers, many women left Iridimi every day or every other day to collect firewood; since solar cookers, outings from the camp have been reduced by 86%.

  2. A remarkable 53% of the women reported that they no longer ever leave the camp to collect firewood at all, and those who do still leave do so much less frequently.

  3. Solar cooking, and the resulting reduced reliance on firewood, has improved personal security and safety, as well as reduced conflicts with neighbors over resources.

  4. Since the cookers were introduced, food rations have rarely been sold or exchanged for firewood.
