As Solomon ben Isaac teaches his lively and daring middle daughter, Miriam, the intricacies of the Talmud, he has no idea how far she will push the boundaries.

Emboldened by her knowledge and mourning the death of her betrothed, Miriam is determined to become not only the community’s midwife, but also its mohel — performing circumcisions. As devoted as she is to her chosen path, she cannot foresee the ways in which she will be tested and how heavily she will need to rely on her faith. And when a shadowy new suitor arrives in Troyes — an exceptionally learned and handsome young scholar who struggles with a secret that, if revealed, would expose them both to ruin — the formidable and independent Miriam must decide if they could forge a life together.

Our book club is registered with Vroman’s Bookstore, 695 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena. Go upstairs to Will Call and tell them you are with PJTC Women’s Book Club to receive a 20% discount coupon good only for the book selection. Please calendar the date, and join the discussion even if you have not finished the book. Let your voice be heard. But now the District is set to revert to Alaskan control, and their dream is coming to an end.

Homicide detective Meyer Landsman of the District Police has enough problems without worrying about the upcoming Reversion. His life is a shambles, his marriage a wreck, his career a disaster. And in the cheap hotel where Landsman has washed up, someone has just committed a murder — right under his nose. When he begins to investigate the killing of his neighbor, a former chess prodigy, word comes from on high that the case is to be dropped immediately, and Landsman finds himself contending with all the powerful forces of faith, obsession, evil, and salvation that are his heritage.

Our book club is registered with Vroman’s Bookstore, 695 E. Come make new friends, read some thought-provoking material, have a nosh and stay a while!
On Wednesday, February 13 at 7:30 PM in Wohlmann Hall we will meet to discuss the Women’s League pick for 2007/08, Disobedience by Naomi Alderman, a finalist for both the National Jewish Book Award for Fiction and the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature.
Please RSVP to sisterhood@pjtc.net.
Z’havah is Sisterhood’s group focusing on the special interests of our younger women, offering help in blending Jewish community with today’s busy lifestyles.
Publisher Notes on Disobedience by Naomi Alderman
For Ronit Krushka, thirty-two and single, who lives on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Orthodox Judaism is a suffocating culture she fled long ago. When she learns that her estranged father, the pre-eminent rabbi of the London Orthodox Jewish community in which she was raised, has died, she leaves behind her Friday night takeout, her troublesome romance, and her boisterous circle of friends and returns home for the first time in years. There, amid the traditional ebb and flow of the community — the quiet young women returning from their kosher shops and the men with their tightly clutched prayer books — Ronit reminds herself of her dual mission: to mourn and to collect a single heirloom — her mother’s Shabbat candlesticks. But when Ronit reconnects with her complex and beloved cousin Dovid and with a forbidden childhood sweetheart, she becomes more than just a stranger in her old home — she becomes a threat.
